Engelberg lies in the heart of Switzerland and it has been receiving resort visitors since the 1850s. It has become a popular year round destination. Skiing began in the valley during the early 20th century, brought in by the Benedictine monks whose monastery is still present. The quaint and scenic village is reminiscent of a postcard with its surrounding peaks, glaciers, and lakes. Skiers especially enjoy ascending the Titlis, a 10,000 ft north-facing peak, in the Rotair revolving gondola. Engelberg has a variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers, however it is especially suited for intermediates. Non-skiers or those who decide to take a day off will find plenty to do in the valley from the 12th-century Benedictine Monastery to a variety of health spas and shopping.
