Hitting the Slopes in Reno-Tahoe
Skiing, snowboarding and winter sports abound
Reno-Tahoe offers visitors a plethora of winter adventures including skiing,
snowboarding, and ice skating. They can even try their hand at dog sledding.
After a thrilling day on the slopes, action awaits at the area's casinos and
entertainment venues. Reno-Tahoe has more than 22,000 acres of skiable terrain
as well as the largest concentration of ski and snowboard resorts in North
America, all located within 90-minutes of the Reno-Tahoe International
Airport. Many local hotels and resorts offer ski packages that include
accommodations and lift tickets. Northstar at Tahoe Resort, Squaw Valley USA,
Alpine Meadows and Mt. Rose offer daily shuttle service from most casino
hotels throughout Reno.
Here's a quick look at the region's ski destinations:
Alpine Meadows has stunning views of Lake Tahoe and the high Sierra. Its
terrain engages and challenges any level skier or rider offering a total of 14
ski lifts, a snowboarding terrain park and a halfpipe.
Diamond Peak, located in Incline Village on the lake's north shore, caters to
skiers and boarders with 30 trails, a high-speed lift and a superpipe.
Homewood Mountain Resort, over 1260 acres of the best skiing and snowboarding
terrain in the Sierras. From groomed boulevards to their trademark hidden
powder stashes, Homewood Mountain Resort has it all. Ellis Peak shelters the
entire mountain from the high ridge winds, the term "wind hold" hasn't been
used at Homewood in years.
Mt. Rose - Ski Tahoe is Lake Tahoe's highest base ski area at an elevation of
7,900 feet. Its advanced routes and snowboarding terrain parks offer
spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe and Nevada's surrounding
high desert terrain.
Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort has 2,904 acres of terrain and a total of 17 lifts
designed for all level skiers. Its vertical drop is 2,280 feet and its longest
run out of 89 available is 1.3 miles long. Northstar Resorty s cross-country
skiing, tubing, ice skating and new world class mountain village make it a
great recommendation for families.
Squaw Valley USA is one of America's premier destination ski resorts,
providing 4,000 skiable acres, 34 lifts and a gondola that whisks visitors to
the top of its High Camp that features a selection of restaurants, shops, an
Olympic museum and a mountaintop ice rink.
Sugar Bowl Ski Resort tempts visitors with an easy to access location off
Interstate 80 and more than 75 trails spread over more than 1,500 acres.
Getting There
Because Reno-Tahoe boasts more than 300 days of sunshine a year, roads are
generally clear, even in mid-winter. Northstar at Tahoe, Mt. Rose, Squaw
Valley and Alpine Meadows all offer shuttle service from most Reno resort
properties. When snowstorms do hit the mountains, aggressive snow removal and
avalanche control ensures that skiers will still be able to safely get to
their favorite resorts for early morning powder runs. At its relatively lower
elevation, the Reno-Sparks area rarely sees significant snow accumulation.
