AKA - Purgatory
In 1965 the ski area was built along Purgatory Creek - a whitty old-timer from the late 1800's had named the brook, which feeds into the Rio de las Animas Perdidas, or "River of Lost Souls". The burgeoning ski area located in the San Juan mountains adopted the Purgatory name, and you'll notice that trail crews have continued the legacy. Now with 11 lifts, including the Purgatory Village Express Six-Pack, 1200 skiable acres and 2029 vertical feet, plus a whopping 35,000 backcountry acres accessible through San Juan Snowcats, Purgatory Mountain has something for everyone.
