Curacao, Caribbean

Curacao, the neighboring Bonaire and three other islands in the eastern Caribbean (St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba), together form the Netherlands Antilles-an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Locals have Dutch nationality and carry European Union passports.

Willemstad is the capital of Curacao and the Netherlands Antilles as well. It is also home to the government (the parliament).

Located in the tropics, just 12ø north of the Equator, Curacao has a warm, sunny climate year round. The average temperature is about 27ø C (in the mid 80s F). Cooling trade winds blow constantly from the east, picking up in the spring months. Short, occasional showers, mostly at night, and continued sunny weather during the day, usually mark the rainy season, which is between October and February. Total annual rainfall averages only 570 mm (22 inches).

Cura‡ao offers some of the best diving in the world. Divers and snorkelers never seem to be able to stop talking about the beauty of Curacao's underwater world.

Curacao has over 35 beaches with a remarkable variety. Choose between intimate rocky coves surrounded by massive cliffs or long sandy beaches, either secluded by nature or bustling with activities. The one thing they all share is crystal clear turquoise water and picture-perfect weather. Almost all of the bathing beaches are scattered along the sheltered and calm southwestern coast, where the waters are calm and crystal clear.
